Sri Adhi Thiruvarangam Perumal Kovil, also known as Ranganatha Perumal Temple, is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Adhi Thiruvarangam, Sankarapuram Taluk, Tamil Nadu. Built in the Dravidian style by the Medieval Cholas and Vijayanagar kings, the temple spans 5 acres and features a historical grain storage container. It is classified as one of the 108 Abhimana Kshethrams in the Vaishnavite tradition, holding deep significance in Hindu mythology and history.
The temple honors Ranganatha Perumal, believed to have appeared to King Mahabali and the Alvars at this sacred site. Six daily rituals and numerous yearly festivals, including the prominent chariot festival in the Tamil month of Chittirai (March–April), mark the temple’s vibrant tradition. Open from 6 am to 7:30 pm, it is managed by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu, drawing devotees from near and far.
According to Hindu legend, Ranganatha Perumal appeared to rescue the Vedas from the demon king Somukan, responding to the pleas of the sages. Another legend tells of Chandra, the moon god, worshipping Vishnu here to lift a curse, establishing the sacred Chandra Pushkarani tank. King Surakeerthi, seeking children, also prayed to Vishnu at this temple. Vishnu’s blessings to celestial deities further elevate the temple's spiritual importance.
Architecturally, the temple has a flat rajagopuram and is enclosed by tall granite walls. The 29-foot-long reclining idol of Ranganatha Perumal, made from herbs, rests under the five-headed snake Adisesha. The shrine also houses the festival deity, Rangarajan, with consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi. Surrounding shrines include those dedicated to Ranganayaki, Kodandarama, Hanuman, and Krishna. The temple's distinctive grain storage container highlights its historical significance within the local farming community.
