Adithyapuram Surya Temple is a Hindu temple situated in Iravimangalam, near Kaduthuruthy, in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. It is primarily recognized as the only shrine dedicated to 'Adithya,' the Hindu solar deity, in the state.
According to legend, the idol of Surya Deva was consecrated during the Treta Yuga, though there is limited factual evidence regarding the temple's origins. It is said that a Nambudiri from the 'Kapikkadu Marangattu Mana' performed deep meditation, or 'Tapas,' to appease the Sun God Adithya.
The 'Sreekovil,' or sanctum sanctorum, of the temple is circular in shape. The idol, which is positioned in a meditative posture, faces west and is crafted from a special type of stone that can absorb oil used during Abhishekam (ritual bathing).
The idol undergoes a holy bathing ritual in the morning, followed by an Abhishekam with water. Remarkably, after sprinkling water on the idol, no oil remains visible. In addition, the upper right hand of the idol holds the Chakra.
