Sree Andalurkavu is a highly revered and ancient Thiyya Community Urayima temple located in Andalur, Dharmadam village, in the Kannur district of Kerala, India. Recognized as one of the Abhimana Kshetras of Vaishnavite shrines, this historic temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. The main festival is celebrated in mid-February, coinciding with the first week of "Kumbam," the Malayalam month.
This Kavu is also associated with a legendary tale involving the Kalaripayat warrior Thacholi Othenan. According to the story, he once troubled the Thiya community in the Kavu Andalur of Thalassery. However, the Thiyars united and managed to punish and defeat him, forcing him to flee the area by crossing the bridge and leaving the region behind.
The name "Andalurkavu," which translates to "Andar-villoor-kavu," can be understood as the grove where the sacred weapons of deities are stored. Additionally, there are fascinating interpretations regarding the names of the surrounding places, such as Melur, Palayad, and Dharmadam, each reflecting the rich cultural and historical significance of the region.
The annual festival is a magnificent showcase of the devotional unity in the area, where the community continues to uphold ancient and sacred customs throughout the season.
