Arulmigu Abathsagayeswarar Temple, also known as Guru Sthalam or Tiru Irum Poolai, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Needamangalam Town near Alangudi village in Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated for its rich spiritual heritage. The temple enshrines Shiva as Apathsahyesvarar, represented by a sacred lingam, while his consort, Parvati, is depicted as Elavarkuzhali. This temple is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, recognized in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram.
Covering an area of two acres, the temple complex features impressive architecture, including a five-tier gateway tower known as gopurams. One of these towers faces the Apathsaheswarar shrine, while another is oriented towards the north. In addition to the main shrine, the temple houses several other shrines, with those of Apathsaheswarar and Elavarkuzhali being particularly prominent. The temple's serene ambiance and intricate designs attract numerous visitors seeking spiritual solace.
The temple follows a rigorous daily schedule, with six rituals conducted at various times from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. It also celebrates four major festivals throughout the year, with the Brahmotsavam festival during Chittirai (April–May) being the most significant. These celebrations draw large crowds, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere and fostering community engagement among devotees. The temple’s vibrant festivals are integral to its cultural significance in the region.
Historically, the original temple complex was believed to have been built by the Chola dynasty, while the current masonry structure dates back to the Nayak period in the 16th century. Today, the temple is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu, ensuring its preservation and accessibility for future generations. Located in Alangudi, the temple is conveniently situated 16 km from Kumbakonam and 56 km from Thanjavur along the Thanjavur-Thiruvarur road, making it a popular pilgrimage destination.
