The Aprameya Temple is believed to have been built in the 11th century by Chola Emperor Rajendra Simha. It is named after Aprameya, a general in the Chola empire.
This place, located on the banks of the Kanva River, has its riverbed constituting a major portion of the village. Hence, it is called Maraloor (ಮರಳೂರು). The name "Manal-ur" from the Mahabharata, which is a Tamil term meaning "Sandy City," later transformed into Mallur in Kannada.
Legend has it that the Lord Aprameya Swamy Temple was built on sand and does not have strong foundations, similar to the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur.
The Brahmotsavam of Sri Ramaprameya Swamy takes place every year in April or May. The temple's architecture is designed in such a way that during this time, the sun's rays at sunrise directly illuminate the sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagudi) of Sri Aprameya Swamy.
