Arjuneswarar Temple, situated on the banks of the Amaravathi River in Kadathur village, Tiruppur district, is a revered temple known for its rich spiritual heritage. The main deity, Moolavar, is Arjuneswarar, who is also referred to as Marudheesar, Marudhudaiyar, and Marundheesar. The consort of Arjuneswarar, Gomathi Amman, is worshipped in the temple, further enhancing its sacred ambiance and drawing numerous devotees seeking blessings and solace.
The temple's history is steeped in legends linked to the Mahabharata period when the Pandavas resided near Dharapuram, a nearby town. It is believed that Arjuna himself worshipped this Linga during that time. Interestingly, the lingam was found buried beneath the roots of an Arjuna tree, leaving distinct impressions on its surface, which further deepens its historical significance and connection to Arjuna's devotion.
In a fascinating tale, the nearby village of Karathozhuvu was known for its cattle, which would often travel to Kaniyur for fruit. Upon returning, these cattle were observed discharging milk onto the root of a Marudha tree. The king of that era, upon hearing this, ordered the tree's cutting. To everyone’s astonishment, blood oozed from the cut root, revealing the sacred Linga underneath, marking the discovery as a miraculous event.
The temple, constructed during the Chola reign, has been preserved through the contributions and support of locals dedicated to maintaining its sanctity. Currently, it is administered by the HR&CE of Tamil Nadu, while the Arjuneswarar Trust ensures the temple's upkeep through donations and grants from devotees, reflecting the community's unwavering commitment to this revered place of worship.
