Arulmigu Koniamman Temple, located on the northern bank of the Noyyal River in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Koniamman, a form of Parvati. The name "Koniamman" is believed to have evolved from "Koyamma," the goddess worshipped by the local chieftain Kovan. It is thought that the city's name, "Koyampuththoor" (Coimbatore), could be derived from the goddess Kovaiamma. This rich etymological connection highlights the temple's deep historical and cultural significance in shaping the identity of Coimbatore.
The temple was built in the 11th century by the descendants of chieftain Kovan, who ruled the region. Over the centuries, it has become a central spiritual hub for the local population, drawing devotees from across the state. The temple continues to be an integral part of Coimbatore’s religious and cultural heritage, fostering a sense of community and tradition.
One of the architectural highlights of the temple is its 84-foot (26-meter) gopuram, which was completed in 2011 at a cost of ₹1.75 crore by the Tamil Nadu government. The annual car festival, held in Panguni, is the most prominent local festival. Other major events include the thirukalyana vaibogam (marriage ceremony of Koniamman), Kundam Vizha, and the temple float festival.
