Tiruppukkozhiyur, also known as Karunaiyaaththaal Temple, is a prominent Hindu temple in Avinasi, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to the deity Shiva. Revered as Avinasiappar, Shiva is worshipped in the form of a lingam, while his consort Parvati is known as Karunambigai. The temple is celebrated in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva work, the Tevaram, by the saint poets called the Nayanars, marking it as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, which enhances its spiritual significance.
Spanning five acres, the temple complex features two majestic gopurams that welcome devotees to the Avinasiappar and Karunambigai shrines. In addition to the main shrines, numerous other smaller shrines contribute to the temple's intricate design. The temple conducts six daily rituals, with four significant yearly festivals, the most notable being the Brahmotsavam during the Magam month, attracting devotees from far and wide to celebrate and seek blessings.
Historically, the temple's original structure is attributed to the Chola dynasty, while the current masonry is believed to have been constructed during the Nayak period in the 16th century. The temple is now managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Tamil Nadu government. Legend has it that Avinasi, meaning "one that cannot be destroyed," symbolizes Shiva's everlasting grace, further solidifying the temple’s prominence in the region.
Architecturally, the temple is situated about 40 km from Coimbatore, featuring a grand seven-tiered rajagopuram that stands over 100 feet tall. The intricate carvings and sculptures within the temple depict various deities and scenes from Hindu mythology. The temple also serves as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, with rituals performed daily and during numerous festivals, ensuring the continuation of its rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
