Shree Badrakali Amman Temple in Sivakasi, Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Badrakali, a fierce form of Parvati. Built in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple's origins date back to the 18th century, with expansions in the 19th and 20th centuries. Enclosed by a granite wall, the temple has a five-tiered gopuram and hosts rituals and festivals, with Panguni Pongal and Chithirai Pongal being the most notable.

The temple’s architecture is impressive, with a 110-foot Rajagopuram that is unique in not aligning axially to the sanctum. The north-facing main deity, Badrakali Amman, sits in a gold-plated vimana. Notable features include a large temple tank, a bell tower, and a shrine of Heramba Vinayaka, with his bandicoot vehicle instead of the traditional lion. Smaller shrines for deities like Lakshmi, Ayyappa, Murugan, and Agora Murthy also surround the main sanctum.

Historically, the temple has strong ties to the Nadar community, who established a prominent commercial base in Sivakasi in the 1800s. Their rising status caused tensions with the Maravars, leading to disputes over temple ownership. In 1899, the Nadars' denied entry to the Kasi Viswanathar temple sparked the Sivakasi riots. These conflicts resulted in the temporary closure of the Badrakali temple, leading to the cancellation of festivals.

The riots marked a tumultuous period, with 22 deaths, extensive property damage, and the burning of over 800 homes and the festival chariot. The violence ceased with the military’s intervention in July 1899, allowing for the eventual reopening of the Badrakali temple and the resumption of its festivals. Today, the temple stands as both a spiritual landmark and a symbol of resilience for the local community.
