Balasubramaniyaswamy Temple, also known as Vennaimalai Murugan Temple, is situated in Vennaimalai, a village near Karur in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the temple is built in the Dravidian architectural style. Located on the Karur-Pugalur Road, the temple's legend ties to Kamadhenu, the divine cow, who took over Brahma's creation duties and formed the butter hill, Vennaimalai, adding to the temple's sacred significance.
The temple features an elevated structure with a three-tiered gopuram leading to the sanctum. A tall granite pillar at the base of the hill aligns with the sanctum housing Balasubramaniyaswamy’s image. Additional shrines include Kasi Viswanathar and Visalakshi, as well as a Vinayaga shrine near the foothills. The sacred temple tank, Thenu Theertham, lies just outside. The Karur district administration promotes the temple as a notable tourist spot.
Temple rituals are performed four times daily: Kalasandhi, Uchikala Pooja, Sayarakshai, and Arthajama Pooja. Each ritual involves decoration, food offerings, and lamp waving for the deities. Major festivals include Panguni Uthiram in March-April, Thai Poosam in January-February, and Karthikai in November-December. Weekly, monthly, and special rituals are also conducted, reflecting the temple's vibrant religious traditions.
The temple is open from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm, with extended hours during festivals. Since 2006, the temple has run an Annadanam scheme, providing free daily lunch to devotees, administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board. This initiative further enhances the temple's appeal as a center for worship and community service.
