Arulmigu Sri Bannari Mariamman Temple in Tamil Nadu, near Sathyamangalam in Erode district, is a revered Amman temple dedicated to goddess Bannari, an avatar of Shakti and known as the goddess of rain. Bannari holds a deep cultural significance in Tamil and Kannada folklore, with her presence prominent throughout the Kongu region, where almost every village has a Mariamman temple, reflecting her widespread worship and powerful influence.
According to legend, Bannari once appeared as a historical figure connected to a couple from the Vannar community. When a woman went into labor while washing clothes by a river, she gave birth to twins. One of the twins, placed in a trough, wouldn’t stop crying. Upon returning, the couple noticed mystical signs suggesting divine intervention. The goddess later appeared in a dream, guiding villagers to her idol hidden in a neem tree.
The legend also speaks to a miraculous discovery: villagers found the goddess’s idol exactly as instructed during a festival, establishing her worship in this sacred spot. This temple holds spiritual importance, with traditions followed to this day. The goddess is believed to be a protective force, ensuring the welfare of her devotees, a belief that endures across generations within the Kongu region.
The Kundam Festival is celebrated annually in Panguni (March-April) and draws vast numbers of devotees. During this grand event, Erode district observes a local holiday. Devotees perform rituals unique to the Kongu region and honor Bannari with offerings and prayers, seeking her blessings. This festival strengthens the cultural heritage and devotion shared by the communities in this region.
