The Bhadrakali Temple is one of the oldest shrines dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, located on a hilltop between the cities of Hanamkonda and Warangal in Telangana, India.
The temple is believed to have been constructed in 625 CE by King Pulakeshin II of the Chalukya dynasty to commemorate his victory over the Vengi region of Andhra Desham, as indicated by inscriptions on the temple walls.
The Kakatiya kings later adopted the temple and revered Goddess Bhadrakali as their kuladevata (family deity). Ganapati Deva, one of the prominent Kakatiya rulers, constructed a lake adjacent to the temple. However, the temple's prominence declined following the fall of the Kakatiya dynasty to the Muslim rulers of Delhi.
The temple lost its prominence during this period. The Kakatiya rulers negotiated a truce with Allauddin Khilji by offering a diamond in exchange for protection from invasion. To enforce this agreement, Khilji sent his trusted slave and confidant, Malik Kufur, to oversee the situation personally.
