The Shri Chitragupta Swamy Temple, located in Nellukara Street, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, is a rare temple dedicated to Chitragupta, the Hindu deity assisting Yama, the god of death. Believed to have emerged from a divine painting, Chitragupta was designated by Brahma as the recorder of human deeds. The temple features a three-tiered Rajagopuram and a single precinct surrounding the sanctum, showcasing Dravidian architectural grandeur, with origins dating back to the Chola dynasty in the 9th century CE.
According to legend, Shiva and Parvathi conceptualized Chitragupta to maintain Dharma on earth by monitoring human deeds. Shiva’s divine drawing of Chitragupta came to life and was entrusted as Yama's accountant. Another legend narrates how Indra, seeking expiation for his sins, worshiped Shiva at this location, leading to the appearance of golden lotuses in a nearby tank on Chitra Pournami. A third story attributes Chitragupta's origin to Kamadhenu’s divine progeny, raised by Indra and Indrani.
The temple boasts a three-tiered gateway tower and a central shrine featuring Chitragupta in a seated posture, holding a pen and script. Inscriptions confirm its construction during the 9th century by the Medieval Cholas, with subsequent maintenance efforts enhancing its heritage. Significant discoveries include metal idols of Chitragupta and his consort Karnikambal during 1911 repair works. These idols now adorn the sanctum, adding historical and spiritual value to the temple.
Chitra Pournami, celebrated in April, is the temple’s most significant festival, attracting numerous devotees. Administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu, the temple has undergone consecration ceremonies in 1918 and 1994. Known for its architectural splendor, rich legends, and religious significance, the Shri Chitragupta Swamy Temple remains one of Kanchipuram's prominent tourist attractions and an enduring symbol of devotion and cultural heritage.
