Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, dedicated to Murugan, is located atop a hill in Palani, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. One of the Six Abodes of Murugan, it is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. The temple's idol, made of Navapashanam, was consecrated by sage Bogar. Pilgrims can reach the temple via steps, a winch-operated railway, or a rope car. Tonsuring and offering Panchamritam, a special prasadam, are key traditions here.
According to legend, the hillock was carried by Idumban, a devotee of Agastya, on orders to balance the earth’s weight. When Murugan settled at Palani, the hill remained in place, becoming the site of this sacred temple. Another story recounts how Murugan, upset after losing a competition to his brother Ganesha, chose to live as a hermit at Palani, renouncing his worldly possessions.
The temple’s history dates back to the Sangam era, where it was referred to as Thiruaavinankudi in ancient literature. The Cheras, Pandyas, and Cholas all played significant roles in expanding the temple. Inscriptions mention several grants and contributions made by these dynasties. Sage Bogar’s idol of Murugan and a shrine dedicated to him in the temple further highlight the temple's spiritual importance.
Over time, the temple became a center for devotion and pilgrimage. Many kings, including those of the Vijayanagara Empire and the Madurai Nayaks, contributed to its development. In the 15th century, poet Arunagirinathar composed hymns about the temple. After the fall of the Nayaks and British rule, the temple became part of Tamil Nadu and continues to be a revered site of worship.
