Sri Dhenupureeswarar Temple, located in Madambakkam, Chennai, is a revered Shiva temple known for its deep religious significance. The temple's name comes from the legend of Shiva granting moksha to a cow (Dhenu) and Sage Kapila, who was reborn as a cow due to improperly worshipping a Shiva lingam. After the cow unearthed the lingam by pouring milk, Shiva appeared, granting liberation to Kapila and forgiveness to the cowherd involved.
The temple’s deity, Dhenupureeswarar, resides in a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shiva lingam, while his consort, Dhenukambal, is worshipped in a separate sanctum. The temple has a fascinating history of rediscovery. In ruins for centuries, it was brought to light by devotees following the guidance of Maha Periyava Sri Chandra Sekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal. The temple was then renovated, attracting thousands of devotees.
Constructed between 956 and 973 CE during the reign of Parantaka Chola II, the father of Raja Raja Chola I, the temple showcases Chola architecture. Its main sanctum is apsidal in shape, resembling the back of a sleeping elephant, a unique feature found in some Chola temples. The temple also houses well-preserved Chola sculptures, carved pillar bases, and inscriptions from the Vijayanagara Empire.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has undertaken significant restoration work to preserve the temple, which includes repairing its weathered structures. The temple has been declared a monument of national importance and is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act. Construction around the temple is prohibited, preserving its historical and cultural value.
