According to popular folklore, the sculptor who carved the idol of Murugan, also known as Shanmughantheswara, had previously sculpted idols at Sikkal and Ettukudi. To ensure that his future works would not surpass the beauty of the Sikkal idol, he inflicted a wound on his thumb. However, upon completing the idol at Ettukudi, he found it more beautiful and, in despair, blinded himself as punishment for his pride.
While sculpting the idol of Murugan at Engan, the once-blind sculptor received help from a woman. In a tragic accident, he cut her finger, and her blood fell onto his eyes, miraculously curing his blindness. Overwhelmed with joy at his newfound sight, he exclaimed "Engan! Engan!" meaning "My eyes" in Tamil. This poignant legend adds to the temple's allure, symbolizing divine intervention and the transformative power of faith.
