The name "Ettumanoor" is believed to have mythological origins derived from the Malayalam words "man oor," meaning "place of deer," where "maan" refers to deer and "oor" signifies place. Alternatively, another interpretation suggests that the name may have come from "Ettu Mana Ooru," which means the place of eight house.
The phrase "Land of Eight Namboothiri Manas" or "Ashta Grihas" refers to the eight Brahmin families that are considered the original custodians, or Ooralans, of the esteemed Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple. These families have played a significant role in the temple's history and traditions.
It is also believed that Lord Shiva manifested in eight different forms (Ettu) at this location (ooru), which contributes to the name Ettumanoor. According to temple tradition, both the Pandavas and the sage Vyasa are said to have worshipped at this temple, adding to its rich historical and spiritual significance.
