The Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple, also known as Perumthrikkovil or Kerala Palani (meaning "Southern Palani"), is located in Haripad, Kerala, and is one of the oldest and largest temples in the region. It is believed to have been established before the onset of Kali Yuga. Renowned as the largest Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Kerala, it is also home to the longest golden flagpost, called the dhwajastambha.
According to legend, the temple's idol was originally worshipped by the sage Parasurama and was later discovered in the Govindamuttom backwaters near Kandanalloor. Remarkably, all the landlords of Eakachakra (now Haripad) are said to have simultaneously envisioned this idol, leading to its consecration in the temple.
The temple was consecrated on the Pushya nakshatra (constellation) in the month of Makara, a day now celebrated annually as the temple’s founding anniversary. It is said that Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of a saint to perform the consecration, inspiring the original name "Harigeethapuram" for what is now Haripad.
In the Malayalam year 1096, a fire broke out at the temple, though the golden flag mast and Koothambalam were fortunately unharmed. Later, during the reign of King Sree Chithira Thirunal Rama Varma, the temple was reconstructed, and the golden flag mast was reinstalled.
