Hooli is a town located in the Belagavi District of Karnataka, India, approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) from Saundatti. One of the oldest villages in the Belgaum District, Hooli is home to the Panchaligeswara Temple and the Trikuteshwara Temple.
The village of Hooli is historically rich, featuring a ruined fort atop a hill and several temples. It has been ruled by the Rattas of Saundatti and the Patwardhans of Ramdurg.
The temples in Hooli display Chalukya architecture and were originally Jain Bastis, suggesting the influence of Chalukya rule. The name "Hooli" is a corrupted form of "PooValli," which means a flowery ear ornament. In ancient times, the village was also known as MahishpatiNagar.
The beautiful architecture of the Hooli Panchalingeshwar Temple is truly admirable. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. In the past, people would often rest in the shade of the temple during summer afternoons.
