Jalakandeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located within the Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore city. This temple, revered for its architectural beauty, stands as a significant symbol of devotion. Legend speaks of a giant ant-hill covering a swayambhu Shiva Lingam at this temple’s present location. Rainwater collected around the anthill, forming a stagnant pool, further enhancing the sanctity of the spot. Chinna Bommi Reddi, a chieftain of the Vijayanagar Empire who controlled the fort, dreamed of Lord Shiva instructing him to build a temple. The dream inspired Reddi to embark on creating a grand sanctuary for Lord Shiva on this sacred ground.
In 1550 CE, Reddi ordered the demolition of the anthill to discover the lingam concealed within. Respecting the vision, he commenced construction of the temple, naming the deity Jalakandeswarar, or “Lord Shiva residing in water” (Jalam in Tamil), as a tribute to the lingam’s unique environment. The temple construction was completed during the reign of Vijayanagar king Sadasivadeva Maharaya, who ruled from 1540 to 1572 CE, further enhancing the region’s spiritual legacy.
Within the temple also stands the statue of Sri Akhilandeshwari Amma, consort of Jalakandeswarar, adding another divine aspect to the temple complex.
