Arulmigu Sri Kailasanathar Temple in Srivaikuntam, located in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Situated 30 km from Tirunelveli, this ancient temple showcases Dravidian architecture with three precincts. Shiva is revered as Kailasanathar, and his consort Parvati is worshipped as Sivakami. This temple is the sixth in the series of Nava Kailasams, where the presiding deity is associated with the planetary deity Saturn, highlighting its astrological significance.
Surrounded by a granite wall, the temple features a unique flat gateway tower, differing from the typical pyramidal entrance of South Indian temples. Originally built by Chandrakula Pandya, significant expansions were made during the 16th century by the Vijayanagar and Nayak kings. The temple is adorned with exquisite sculptures that represent Nayak art, making it a fascinating site for both devotees and art enthusiasts alike, open from 6 am to 12 pm and 4 to 7 pm daily.
Legend has it that sage Urosamar established the temple after a flower floated to the shore of the Tamiraparani River, marking the spot for Shiva's worship. The lingam, representing an aspect of Shani (Saturn), adds to the temple's spiritual aura. This temple is part of the Nava Kailasam group, with each temple dedicated to a different planetary deity, further intertwining its cultural and religious narratives. The image of Nataraja is always covered with sandal paste, earning it the name Rathnasabapathy.
The temple follows Shaivite traditions with rituals performed four times daily, including offerings and decorations for both Kailasanathar and Sivakami. Major festivals include the Brahmotsavam during Chittirai and Aippasi, attracting thousands of devotees. Other significant celebrations like Sivarathri and Thirukalyanam further enhance the temple's vibrant atmosphere. The temple is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of Tamil Nadu, ensuring the preservation of its rich heritage and spiritual significance.
