Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple, dedicated to the fierce form of Bhadrakali, is located near the Valapattanam River and serves as the family shrine of the Chirakkal Royal Family. The deity, Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy, is revered as the mother of the ancient martial art Kalarippayattu.

The holy shrine is part of the Devi temple triad of the former Chirakkal Kingdom, alongside Cherukunnu Annapoornashwari Temple and Tiruvarkadu Bhagavathy Temple (Madayi Kavu). According to mythology, Annapoornashwari traveled from Kasi to Chirakkal in a boat, accompanied by Kalarivathukkalamma and Madayikkavilamma, to visit the Krishna temple.

The Kolathiris moved their capital from Ezhimala to Chirakkal, situated near the Valapattanam River, and became known as the Chirakkal Raja. During the ancient period of recorded history, they were referred to as the Mooshika kings.

The Thiruvananthapuram District was home to two of the oldest and most prestigious lineages of the Velir clan, which engaged in numerous intermarriages with the Cheras, Pandyas, Cholas, and Pallavas over the millennia.
