Kallalagar Temple, also known as Thirumaliruncholai, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, located in Alagar Koyil, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams glorified in the Tamil Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Vishnu, worshiped as Kallalagar, and his consort Lakshmi, as Thirumagal, are enshrined here. The temple’s granite walls and seven-tiered rajagopuram exhibit its architectural magnificence.
Surrounded by a large fort, the temple is partially in ruins yet exudes historical charm. Kallalagar Temple follows the Tenkalai tradition of worship, performing six daily rituals and hosting grand annual festivals like the Masi Float Festival, Navratri, and Vaikunta Ekadashi. These events attract thousands of devotees annually. The temple is under the administration of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, maintaining its rich traditions and spiritual significance.
According to legend, Sage Suthapas, cursed by Sage Durvasa, turned into a frog and performed penance on the Vaigai River's banks. Kallalagar descended from Alagar Hill to redeem him. This event is reenacted annually during a procession where the deity travels through Malaipatti, Alanganallur, and Vayalur to reach Thenur Mandapam, a structure built by Thirumalai Nayak during his rule, where the curse redemption ritual takes place.
Another legend narrates that Yama, the god of death, worshiped Kallalagar and requested him to stay at the site. Vishnu agreed, and a temple was built with the divine architect Vishvakarma’s assistance. These rich mythological connections, combined with the temple's historical significance and devotion, make Kallalagar Temple a timeless spiritual destination for pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.
