The Kandiyoor Sree Mahadeva Temple is an ancient Shiva temple located in Kandiyoor, near Mavelikkara, along the banks of the Achankovil River. Historically, Kandiyoor served as the capital of the Odanadu kingdom and is connected to the ancient Buddhist heritage of Kerala. Nearby, the Mattom Sree Mahadeva Temple, also known as Shiva Nada, is situated about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) west of Mavelikkara town and to the north of State Highway 6, covering an area of 7.5 acres.
The temple is steeped in legend and is regarded as one of the 108 great Shiva temples in ancient Kerala, believed to have been consecrated by Lord Parashurama. Another legend tells of Rishi Mrikandu, father of Rishi Markandeya, who discovered an idol of Lord Shiva in his Kirathamoorthy form while bathing in the Ganges.
Upon hearing an oracle that the idol should be placed in a sacred and suitable location, Rishi Mrikandu began his search for the perfect site. He traveled to Kerala and found himself on the banks of the Achankovil River, where he established the temple in Kandiyoor. The name "Kandiyoor" is thought to be a derivative of Kandathil.
Another legend suggests that the temple is situated at the spot where Lord Shiva severed Lord Brahma's head. The name "Kandiyoor" is also believed to be derived from the name of Shiva, referred to as Sri Kantan. It is said that Lord Parasurama later renovated the temple and bestowed tantrik rights upon the Tharananallur family.
