The Mahakuta group of temples is situated in the village of Mahakuta, in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. It is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site and the location of a renowned Shaiva monastery.
The temples date back to the 6th or 7th century CE and were built by the early rulers of the Chalukya dynasty of Badami.
The dating of the temples is determined by their architectural style, which resembles that of the temples in nearby Aihole. Additionally, two important inscriptions in the complex, including the Mahakuta Pillar inscription, which dates between 595–602 CE, provide further evidence.
The dating of the temples is also supported by two significant inscriptions in the complex: one is the Mahakuta Pillar inscription, written in Sanskrit and Kannada script, dating between 595–602 CE. The other is an inscription of Vinapoti, a concubine of King Vijayaditya, dated between 696–733 CE, which is written in Kannada language and script.
