Melakadambur Amirthakadeshvarar Temple (மேலக்கடம்பூர் அமிர்தகடேஸ்வரர் கோயில்) is a historic Hindu temple located in Melakadambur, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, India. The site, once known as Tirukadambur, features Shiva as the presiding deity, called Amirtha Kadeswarar, and his consort Vidyujothi Nayaki. Emperor Kulottunga Chola I constructed this temple, noted for its exquisite sculptures and chariot-shaped vimana, a unique architectural marvel in Tamil Nadu.
The temple’s name comes from “Amritha” (nectar), “Kada” (pot), and “Eeswara” (Lord Shiva), reflecting the temple’s mythological significance. According to legend, when the Devas began drinking nectar without first honoring Lord Ganesha, he took the nectar pot. Passing through Melakadambur, a drop of nectar fell here, forming a Swayambhu Linga. After receiving Lord Ganesha’s forgiveness, the Devas worshipped Lord Shiva as AmirthaKadeswarar.
Further mythology narrates that Indra wanted to transport the temple to Devaloka, so his mother, Aditi, could worship Shiva daily. However, when he tried moving it, Lord Ganesha prevented the temple’s movement by sinking one wheel of the chariot into the ground. After Indra’s unsuccessful attempts to fulfill Ganesha’s terms, Lord Shiva advised him to install one linga with a thousand chants, ultimately appeasing Indra’s wish.
The temple’s architecture is an exemplary model of Dravidian style and is classified as a Karak Kovil, a chariot-shaped temple traditionally used during festivals. This architectural style can be seen in other renowned temples, such as the Sarangapani Temple in Kumbakonam and Thyagaraja Temple in Tiruvarur, all featuring mandapas resembling a chariot drawn by horses or elephants, symbolizing divine grandeur and devotion.
