The Shankareshvara Temple (also spelled "Shankareshwara" or "Sankaresvara"), dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, is situated in Turuvekere, a small town in Tumkur district.
Turuvekere, located in Karnataka, India, was founded as an Agraharam town (a center of learning) in the 13th century. It is situated approximately 77 miles from the state capital, Bangalore.
The temple was constructed around 1260 A.D. during the reign of King Narasimha III of the Hoysala Empire. It is recognized as a protected monument under the Karnataka state division of the Archaeological Survey of India.
According to art historian Adam Hardy, the temple follows a Bhumija Nagara style (North Indian) plan, built on a semi-stellate base known as mula-prasadaise.
