Moovar Koil, or "The Three Temples," is a Hindu temple complex located in Kodumbalur, Tamil Nadu, about 36 kilometers from Pudukkottai. Constructed by Boothi Vikramakesari, a Chola feudatory, these temples reflect the architectural brilliance of the era. Only two of the original three temples have survived to this day.
The temples were built to honor the chief and his two wives, Nangai Varaguna Perumanar and Karrali. The northern shrine's basement, resembling a full-blown lotus flower, is an architectural marvel. The central and southern shrines are largely intact, with intricate wall details and a small shrine for Nandi in front.
Historian Harle considers Moovar Koil among the four early extant temples of the Chola Empire. These structures showcase Pallava architectural influence and feature a fair-sized porch, known locally as ardhamandapa, slightly below ground level. Predominantly constructed from stone, they are representative of early medieval temple design in South India.
Nearby, the Muchukundeswarar Temple, dating back to the Early Chola period, further emphasizes the historical significance of the area. Moovar Koil, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, offers insight into the political climate of South India between the 8th and 10th centuries, illustrating the connection between the Cholas and the Irukkuvel chieftains.
