Othandeeswarar Temple, located in Thirumazhisai, Chennai City, within the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, is a significant Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Approximately 22 km from Chennai, the temple showcases the Dravidian architectural style, built during the 11th century by Chola king Kulothunga Chola II. Here, Shiva is worshipped as Othandeeswarar, and his consort Parvathi is revered as Kulirvithanayaki, attracting devotees and visitors alike to its spiritual ambiance.
Surrounded by a granite wall, the temple complex encompasses several shrines, with a striking five-tiered rajagopuram serving as the gateway. The temple saw further expansions during the 16th century under the patronage of the Vijayanagara kings, enhancing its grandeur. Open daily from 6 am to 11:30 am and 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm, the temple hosts four daily rituals and numerous annual festivals, with the Brahmotsavam in Panguni and Sani Peyarchi being particularly significant.
Legend has it that King Kulothunga Chola II, while hunting, encountered a mysterious blockade. Upon attempting to clear it with his sword, he discovered bloodstains, which emanated from a lingam, leading him to realize his unintentional transgression. In a show of devotion, he cut his hand, prompting Shiva to appear as Othandeeswarar, healing the king and restoring his hand, earning the deity the name Kai Thantha Piran.
Historically, the temple is rich with inscriptions dating back to the Chola period, showcasing its ancient roots. Kulothunga Chola II is credited with the temple's current structure, while additional shrines were likely added later. The temple has also been maintained and refurbished by the Sengunda Mudaliyars and the Vijayanagara kings, with modern administration overseen by the Hindu Religious and Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
