Sri Padalathri Narasimhar Temple, also known as Singaperumal Koil, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Narasimha avatar, situated near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Built in rock-cut style by the Pallavas in the 8th century, the temple honors Narasimhar and his consort, Ahobilavalli. Initially part of Kanchipuram district, the temple now falls under Chengalpattu and is considered one of the 108 Abhimana Kshethrams in the Vaishnavite tradition.
The temple is open daily from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., hosting four rituals at different times. Celebrated festivals include the Chittirai Brahmotsavam in April-May, Narasimha Jayanthi, Pavithra Utsavam in June-July, and the Maasi float festival in February-March. The Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of Tamil Nadu oversees the temple’s management, ensuring its upkeep and ritualistic integrity.
According to legend, Singaperumal Koil is also called Sri Padalathri in Sanskrit and is mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana. It is said that Vishnu appeared here as Narasimha after killing the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who had received a boon from Brahma. After slaying Hiranyakashipu to protect his devotee Prahlada, Narasimha’s wrath was intense, but Prahlada’s prayers ultimately calmed him. Narasimha is believed to have bathed in the temple tank, turning the water red from his rage.
Originally known by names like Alvar Narasingadevar and Narsinga Vinnagar Alvar, Singaperumal Koil’s earliest construction dates back to the Pallava dynasty, with later inscriptions by the Cholas in the 10th and 11th centuries. The oldest inscription, dating to Raja Raja Chola’s reign, mentions a gift of 26 sheep for lighting temple oil lamps. Another inscription from the Andal shrine shows contributions made to honor the deity. Some inscriptions are partially damaged, yet they chronicle the temple’s deep historical significance.
