Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, located at Pariyur near Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu, is an important Amman temple. It is surrounded by other significant temples, including Sri Amarapaneeswarar Temple and Sri Adinarayana Perumal Temple. The temple’s history is rich, dating back centuries, with the current structure established in the mid-1950s. Previously known as Azhagapuri, the name Pariyur derives from "Pari oor," meaning "place ruled by Pari," a king celebrated in Tamil literature.
The architecture of the temple features a striking five-storey Gopuram at the south corner and an outer mandapam made of black marble. Intricate carvings adorn the temple's pillars, including a unique ball-shaped stone inside the mouth of a lion, symbolizing the Goddess's vehicle. The goddess, facing north, wears a fire crown and stands triumphantly over a demon, embodying her protective power. Various shrines within the temple honor deities such as Siddhi Vinayagar and Sri Maha Muniappan.
The temple operates daily from 6 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, with daily pujas and abisegams held thrice. Visitors can receive Prasadham from a dedicated stall. A unique practice called "Vaaku Kettal" allows devotees to seek the Goddess's guidance, using flowers to determine her decision. Special dressing of the Goddess occurs during festivities, enhancing the temple’s vibrant spiritual atmosphere throughout the year.
Festivals at Kondathu Kaliamman Temple attract large crowds, particularly the annual Fire Walking Ceremony in January, drawing lakhs of visitors. The month-long celebrations commence with 'poochatuthal,' followed by a series of events including the famous Kundam and a grand car festival. Other significant festivals include Navaratri and Pongal. In addition to spiritual observances, the temple provides midday meals for the needy, reinforcing its commitment to community welfare. The newly constructed marriage hall further highlights the temple's cultural significance.
