Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the town of Piravom, Ernakulam, Kerala, India. A remarkable phenomenon observed at this temple is that the Muvattupuzha River, which typically flows west from the east, changes direction upon reaching the temple. It temporarily retraces its path and flows east for a certain distance before diverting again to the north and west. Had the river not altered its course, the temple would have been washed away.
Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil is a Sandhara type temple featuring cardinal doors on all four sides. The plinth and walls are constructed of granite stone, while the rest of the structure consists of timber and a circular roof in the vimana. The dwarapalakas (temple guardians) are carved from wood. The main deity, Lord Shiva, is positioned facing east. The square ardhamandapa boasts exquisite wooden carvings on its ceiling. Additionally, the pranala is a beautifully ornate example of traditional Kerala style, adorned with a standing Yaksha.
Due to its structural and mural significance, the temple was designated as a protected monument by the Kerala State Archaeology Department in 1994.
The temple features remarkable examples of ancient wooden craftsmanship, depicting various scenes from the Puranas as well as figures from the Bhagavata Purana, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. It is believed to date back to the 12th century AD.
