Perunna Subrahmanya Swami Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the Perunna neighborhood of Changanacherry. The temple is dedicated to Subrahmanya Swami, also known as Kartikeya, who is revered as one of the three sons of Lord Shiva. The temple also honors Lord Krishna, reflecting the rich tapestry of deities worshipped within its sanctum.
Perunna Subrahmanya Swami Temple holds a significant place in Kerala's history as the first temple to be opened to all Hindus, regardless of caste. This progressive step occurred before the order of Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of the Kingdom of Travancore and was championed by Mannathu Padmanabhan.
Upon hearing about this significant event, Mohandas Gandhi visited the temple during his first trip to Kerala, where he worshipped Lord Muruga. A grand ceremony and meeting were subsequently held at the east gate of the temple to commemorate the occasion.
In the temple, the fierce form of Subrahmanya Swami is revered, with his Vel (spear) pointed downwards. Here, Subrahmanya Swamy is worshipped as Devasenapathi, the supreme general of the divine forces, symbolizing strength and valor.
