Sri Perur Pateeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Perur, on the western side of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Constructed by the Chola king Karikala in the 2nd century CE, this temple is located on the banks of the Noyyal River. Renowned poets like Arunagirinathar and Kachiappa Munivar have praised the temple. The presiding deity, Patteeswarar (Shiva), along with his consort Pachainayaki (Parvati), is worshipped here, with the main deity being a Swayambu Lingam.
The temple has been known by several names over the centuries, such as Kamadenupuri, Pattipuri, Adhipuri, Daksha Kailasham, Thavasiddhapuram, and Melai Chidambaram. Contributions to the temple were also made by the Imperial Cholas during the late 10th and early 11th centuries, reflecting its historical significance and longstanding legacy. It remains a prominent spiritual center for devotees of Lord Shiva.
Architecturally, Sri Perur Pateeswarar Temple features grand gopurams and intricately designed halls. The most notable is the Kanaka Sabha, which houses a golden statue of Nataraja. The ceiling displays an elaborate network of stone chains, while the temple’s pillars are adorned with carvings depicting Shiva in his many forms, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship from various eras of Tamil temple architecture.
Culturally, the temple celebrates an annual classical dance week, particularly focusing on Bharata Natyam performances. It is believed that this temple is one of the sacred locations where Lord Shiva performed the Ananda Thandavam (the Dance of Bliss). This cultural festival draws numerous visitors and performers, maintaining the temple’s importance in Tamil art and spiritual traditions.
