According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this ornate temple complex dates back to the 10th century, constructed during the Nolamba dynasty. It was later partially renovated by the Chola dynasty.
The main Mandapam and Rajagopuram of the Ramalingeshwara temple were built by the Vijayanagara kings. The temple is now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.
Avani is a historically significant place, with an inscription dating back to 399 A.D. according to the Archaeological Survey of India. Later inscriptions refer to it as the "Gaya of the south." Legend holds that Avani was the abode of the Hindu saint Valmiki.
