Arulmigu Ranganathaswamy Temple, also known as Karamadai Temple, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and located in Karamadai, Tamil Nadu, 23 km from Coimbatore along the Coimbatore–Mettupalayam highway. Built in Dravidian architectural style, the temple honors Vishnu as Ranganathaswamy and his consort Lakshmi as Ranganayaki. It is one of the 108 Abhimana Kshethram of Vaishnavite tradition and one of the five Pancharanga Kshetrams in Coimbatore, highlighting its spiritual significance.
According to legend, Ranganatha's face was discovered under an anthill, in a region inhabited by the Kattariyar tribe. The temple is surrounded by a granite wall enclosing all its shrines, with a seven-tiered rajagopuram at the entrance. The temple follows the Tenkalai tradition of worship, with four daily rituals and numerous yearly festivals. The Brahmotsavam during Maasi, Vaikunta Ekadasi, and Ramanuja Jayanti are the most prominent celebrations here.
The temple's origin is linked to a herdsman who, upon noticing that his cow was emptying its milk into an anthill, uncovered the anthill only to witness blood seeping out. Following spiritual advice, a temple was built. According to modern legend, a British general planned to build a railway through the temple but, after a divine vision, withdrew his plans and gifted a festive horse statue for temple processions.
The temple was originally constructed during the Chola Empire in the 10th–11th centuries. It was later expanded by Tirumalai Nayakar, who built the temple's walls and halls. Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar also contributed additional halls, while Ramanuja is said to have visited the temple during his travels. The northern tower was constructed in 1944, and the seven-tiered eastern tower, standing at 80 feet, was built in 2013, along with renovations of older structures.
