The Marikamba Temple is situated in Sagara, within the Shimoga district of Karnataka, India. It houses the idol of the goddess Marikamba Devi.
The temple was constructed in the heart of the city during the reign of Venkatappa Nayaka, who ruled the Keladi and Ikkeri kingdoms in the 16th century. Marikamba was the family deity of the Nayaka dynasty.
Adi Shankaracharya, the revered philosopher-saint of Hinduism, visited Sagar during one of his travels across South India. During his stay, the goddess Marikamba appeared to him in a dream and instructed him to build a temple in her honor at that very location.
He subsequently consecrated the footprints of the goddess at the outskirts of the city. During this time, in 1596, the Kadamba, Chalukya, and Hoysala dynasties were engaged in conflict with one another.
