Sathyamurthi Perumal Temple in Thirumayam, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, it is celebrated in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, a revered Tamil canon from the 6th to 9th centuries CE. One of the 108 Divya Desams, Vishnu is worshipped here as Sathyamurthi Perumal, alongside his consort Lakshmi as Ujeevana Thayar, highlighting the temple's spiritual significance.
Believed to be built in the 9th century by the Pallavas, the temple is encircled by a granite wall that encompasses its various shrines. The five-tiered rajagopuram serves as the gateway tower and is adjacent to a fort constructed in the 15th century. Inside the temple complex lies a sacred tank, emphasizing the blend of spirituality and architectural grandeur.
The Archaeological Survey of India administers the temple, ensuring its preservation as a protected monument. Following the Tenkalai tradition, the temple hosts four daily rituals and numerous annual festivals, with the car festival in Vaikasi, Krishna Jayanti in Avani, and Adi Puram in July-August being the most prominent, attracting devotees from far and wide.
According to legend, Adishesha, Vishnu's serpent-mount, performed penance at this site, leading to Vishnu's appearance in the form of Hayagriva. Additionally, sage Satya, who sought a boon from Vishnu, was granted the promise of salvation at this location. This temple's historical significance is further highlighted by inscriptions and contributions from notable rulers, marking it as a vital cultural and spiritual site in Tamil Nadu.
