Sikkal Singara Velar Temple, dedicated to Lord Muruga, is among Tamil Nadu's revered temples. Often considered the unofficial seventh Padaiveedu (sacred abode) of Lord Muruga, it stands alongside the renowned Arupadaiveedu. According to Hindu mythology, Sikkal was once a fragrant jasmine forest where Kamadhenu, the divine cow, lived. Cursed by Lord Shiva for consuming meat, Kamadhenu worshiped at this site, bathing in the holy Parkulam (milk pond) to absolve her sins. Maharishi Vashistha fashioned a Lingam from butter offered by Kamadhenu, but it adhered to the ground, leading to the name Sikkal. Lord Muruga later received his Vel here to defeat the demon Soorapadman.
The temple's highlight is the Soora Samharam festival, commemorating Lord Muruga receiving the divine Vel from his mother, Goddess Parvathi. This event symbolizes his victory over Soorapadman. During the festival, devotees witness a miraculous occurrence where the idol is believed to sweat.
