The Rakthakanda Swamy Temple, commonly referred to as Omallur Temple, is located in Omallur, Pathanamthitta District, and its history dates back to the 8th century AD. This temple serves as a significant pilgrimage center on the route to Sabarimala from Pandalam.
The temple is known as the birthplace of Sree Ayyappan and is renowned for its annual 10-day festival held in the month of Medom according to the Malayalam calendar. This vibrant festival is celebrated by ten local Karayogams, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and community spirit of the region.
The Arattu procession to the Achenkovil River is a significant highlight of the temple's festivities. It features over ten elephants adorned with Nettipattom, a decorative cover placed on their foreheads, which adds a unique charm to the event. Additionally, the temple boasts a Golden Flag Staff, which was erected in the year 1952 AD, symbolizing its rich history and cultural importance.
The history of the temple is intertwined with the village of Kalleli, located near Konni Town. According to local tradition, the main deity was cast into the Achankovil River by the villagers after they lost a game of Choothu, a traditional game played in Kerala.
