Sringeri (IAST: Śṛṅgerī), also known as Shringeri, is a hill town and the Taluk headquarters located in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, India.
Sringeri is home to the first maṭha, the Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada Peetham, established by Adi Shankara, the Hindu theologian and proponent of Advaita Vedanta philosophy. It is situated on the banks of the Tungā River.
The town attracts a significant number of pilgrims to its temples, including those of Sri Sharadamba, Sri Vidyashankara, Sri Malahanikareshvara, and other deities.
The name Sringeri is derived from Rishyashringa-giri, a nearby hill believed to have been the site of the hermitage of Rishi Vibhandaka and his son Rishyashringa.
