The Tiruttani Subramanya Swami Thirukkovil, located on the hill of Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district, is a significant Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. This revered site features 365 steps, symbolizing the days of the year, and is the fifth among the six abodes of Murugan, known as Arupadai Vidu. Situated just 87 kilometers from Chennai, it uniquely lies within the Greater Chennai Metropolitan Area. Historically, Tiruttani was known as Kundruthoradal during the Sangam era.
The temple's origins trace back to ancient times, with mentions in the Sangam period's literary work, Tirumurugatruppadai, by Nakkeerar. It has garnered support from various rulers, including the Vijayanagara dynasty, local chieftains, and zamindars. Notably, Murugan's original animal mount is believed to have been an elephant, contrasting with the more common depiction of a peacock. This unique iconography is preserved in only two locations: this temple and the Tiruttani Murugan Temple.
Legends associated with the temple add to its cultural richness. One story recounts how Indra, the king of the devas, gave his daughter Devasena to Murugan along with his elephant, Airavata. Following Airavata's departure, Indra's fortunes dwindled, leading Murugan to offer the elephant back. However, due to protocol, Indra refused the gift, leading to the elephant's image facing east within the temple, symbolizing this intriguing exchange.
Another legend speaks of Indra presenting a sandal stone as part of his daughter's dowry. The sandal paste made from this stone is believed to possess medicinal properties when applied to Murugan's image. Additionally, Murugan is celebrated for imparting knowledge of Tamil to sage Agastya, who worshipped him at this shrine. The temple is also associated with Vasuki, the king of snakes, who received healing from Murugan after sustaining injuries during the churning of the ocean for the nectar of immortality.
