The Arulmigu Subramanya Swami Temple in Tiruchendur is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kartikeya) and ranks as the second among the six abodes of Murugan (Āṟupatai vitukal) in Tamil Nadu. Located at the eastern end of Tiruchendur in the Thoothukudi district, it is just 40 km from Thoothukudi and 75 km from Kanyakumari. The temple complex beautifully sits on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, attracting numerous devotees throughout the year.
The temple is famous for its cultural events, including Surasamharam, a reenactment of Murugan’s victory over the demon Surapadman, and Kanda Shasti, a devotional song praising Murugan. According to Hindu legend, Tiruchendur is prominently mentioned in the Skanda Puranam, detailing Murugan's epic battle against Surapadman. The demon king gained immense power from boons granted by Lord Shiva, leading him to trouble the gods. Murugan, the son of Shiva, was called upon to restore order. In a fierce battle, he defeated Surapadman and transformed his remnants into his divine vehicles, a peacock and a rooster, celebrated during the Skanda Sashti festival.
The architecture of the temple is striking, featuring a nine-tier gopuram (tower gate) standing 157 feet high. Built near the seashore, it measures 91 meters in length and 65 meters in width. The inner sanctum is carved from granite, depicting Murugan as a saintly child, with a sacred well nearby, where devotees undergo ritual cleansing. The temple’s history includes the brief Dutch occupation in the 17th century, during which they took a significant deity idol, later returned by a devotee after a divine intervention.
