According to Hindu legend, during the divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati, Sage Agasthya, unable to witness the event due to the crowd at Kailash, prayed at this site. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva appeared to Agasthya and his wife, Lopamundra, granting them a view of the wedding. This sacred place became known as Kutralanathar, further enriched by local legends involving the Tamiraparani River and the sage Urosamar, who established a temple dedicated to the deity.
The temple structure features a unique conch-shaped design, referred to as Sangakkovil, with Shiva manifested as Bhrama and Vishnu in the shrine. The presiding deity is Kuttralanathar, accompanied by his consort Kuzhalvoi Mozhiammai.
