Thirumeninathar Temple, also known as Boominathar Temple or Tiruchuli Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in Tiruchuli, Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. Here, Shiva is worshipped as Thirumeninathar, represented by the sacred lingam, while his consort Parvati is depicted as Thunaimalaiyammai Amman. Located on the Virudhunagar–Manamadurai road, this temple is celebrated in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, composed by the saint poets called nayanmars.
The temple complex spans two and a half acres, enclosed by concentric rectangular walls. It houses several shrines, with the most significant being those of Thirumeninathar, Thunaimalai Amman, and Pralayavitankar. Daily rituals occur thrice, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the temple hosts numerous festivals, among which the Thirukalyana festival during Panguni (February–March) and Chitra Pournamai are particularly noteworthy, drawing many devotees throughout the year.
Legend has it that the Dinakareswara Lingam was worshipped by the Sun, and Parvati meditated upon Shiva for marriage, celebrated annually in the Amman Tapas Utsavam during Aadi. This temple is believed to be the site where Shiva diverted floods during a great deluge, leading to the name Tiruchuli, meaning "swirl" in Tamil. The temple is historically linked to Sundaramoorthy Nayanar, who visited with Chera King Cheramaan Perumal.
Tiruchuli is also the birthplace of Ramana Maharishi, a prominent Saivite saint, adding to its spiritual significance. The original temple is thought to have been constructed by the Pandyas, with subsequent contributions from various dynasties over the centuries. Currently, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu, ensuring the preservation of its rich heritage and traditions.
