Thirumuruganatha Swamy Temple, also known as Thirumuruganpoondi Temple, is situated in Thirumuruganpoondi, a panchayat town in Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Thirumuruganatheeswarar, with his consort Parvathi known as Avudainayagi. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple's current structure dates back to the 10th century during the Kongu Cholas period, showcasing exquisite artistry and historical significance.
The temple is revered in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical text, the Tevaram, authored by the saint poets known as the Nayanmars, and is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing its various shrines. Notably, the temple lacks a rajagopuram, a common feature in South Indian temples. It remains open daily from 5:30 am to 12:45 pm and 3:30 pm to 8:15 pm, welcoming devotees and visitors alike.
Daily rituals at the temple are held four times, complemented by numerous annual festivals, with the Brahmotsavam celebrated during the Tamil month of Maasi (February-March) being particularly significant, alongside Mahashivaratri. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu, ensuring the preservation of its cultural and spiritual heritage for generations to come.
According to legend, the village's name stems from Lord Murugan, who is believed to have installed and worshipped Lord Shiva at this site. Following his victory over the demon king Surapadma, Murugan incurred Brahmahatti Dosha for slaying the demon. To atone, he is said to have dug a spring with his spear, Vel, and worshipped Shiva, thus establishing the deity's name as Muruganathaswamy in this sacred locale.
