The Thiruneermalai Neervanna Perumal Temple complex, located in a suburb of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, consists of two Hindu temples: the Ranganatha Temple and the Thiruneermalai Neervanna Perumal Temple. This sacred site spans 15 acres, with one temple at the foothills dedicated to Neervana Perumal, in a standing posture, and another uphill, dedicated to Ranganatha. The temple also features a Ranga Vimana over the sanctum and several shrines for other deities, including Trivikrama and Narasimha.
The complex houses four sacred temple tanks, each with its own significance. The Kshira Pushkarini tank is believed to be connected to Vaikuntha and the Ocean of Milk. The Karunya Pushkarini is thought to have formed from Narasimha’s tears, while the Svarna Pushkarini and Siddha Pushkarini add to the site's spiritual importance. The temple complex reflects the architectural and spiritual heritage of Tamil Nadu and has inscriptions from the Chola and Pandya dynasties.
Legend has it that Sage Valmiki worshipped Ranganatha atop the hill after composing the Ramayana, with Rama and his entourage appearing to bless him. Another legend mentions the poet-saint Thirumangai Alvar, who was stranded on the hill for six months due to the water surrounding it. The temple is one of the Ashtasvayamvaka Kshetras, where Vishnu is seen in four postures: standing, lying, sitting, and walking.
The temple follows the Vaikhanasa tradition, with religious festivals like Brahmotsavams celebrated twice a year. The Panguni Brahmotsavam is dedicated to Neervana Perumal, while the Chittirai Brahmotsavam is for Ranganatha Perumal. Additionally, the Uttiram festival is held in honor of the goddess consorts, with the Panguni Uttiram dedicated to Ranganayaki Tayar and the Masi Uttiram for Animamalarmangai Tayar.
