Shri Ulagalantha Perumal Temple, also known as Trivikrama Temple, is a revered Hindu temple in Tirukkoyilur, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by the Alvar saints. Built by the Medieval Cholas with contributions from the Vijayanagara kings and Madurai Nayaks, the temple spans five acres and features the third-tallest temple tower in Tamil Nadu, standing at 192 feet.
According to Hindu mythology, Vamana, an avatar of Vishnu, appeared here to subdue the pride of the asura king Bali. This sacred site is associated with the salvation of the first three Alvars – Poigai, Bhoothath, and Peyalvar. It is also one of the five holy temples connected to Lord Krishna. Six daily rituals and twelve annual festivals, including the prominent chariot festival in the Tamil month of Panguni, are observed at the temple.
The temple's eleven-tiered rajagopuram stands at 59 meters, making it one of Tamil Nadu’s tallest. The sanctum houses a wooden image of Ulagalantha Perumal in an imposing stance. Unique shrines for deities like Lakshmi Narayana, Varadaraja, and Vishnu Durga add to its distinct character. Notably, the temple also features shrines for Andal, Rama, and Krishna, along with several tanks, the Chakra Theertham being the most significant.
Historically, the temple was governed by various dynasties, with inscriptions detailing contributions from the Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara empires. Originally a brick structure, it was transformed with granite by Virarajendra Chola and Narasimha Varma. Contributions continued from later Chola and Vijayanagara rulers, expanding the temple further. It served as a British fortress during the Carnatic wars and faced attacks under Hyder Ali, marking its historical resilience and spiritual prominence.
