Vallimalai Murugan Hill Temple, a serene village in Katpadi Taluk of Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, is located 30 km from Vellore City near Ponnai. Known for the ancient Subramaniyar Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, Vallimalai draws devotees from all around. This temple is steeped in history, with legends connecting it to Murugan’s consort, Valli, making it a cherished spiritual destination rich with Tamil culture and folklore.
According to legend, Valli, daughter of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi, was born here after a drop of Lakshmi's sweat, consumed by a deer, led to Valli’s miraculous birth. Raised by the local tribal chief, she grew into a beautiful young woman. Learning of her beauty, Lord Murugan, with Narada Muni’s guidance, sought her hand. Through Lord Ganesha’s assistance, Valli and Murugan were eventually united and eloped to Thirutthani.
Interestingly, another place called Vellimalai, near Kanyakumari, also holds a similar narrative, claiming Valli was born there to marry Murugan in a divine love story. Vallimalai remains deeply associated with Valli, Murugan, and Deivanai, creating a perpetual aura of devotion. The Thiruppugazh Ashram atop Vallimalai keeps alive the devotion and stories surrounding Valli, maintaining its legacy of spiritual significance.
During the Pallava dynasty, the Subramaniyar Temple, a rock-cut marvel, was built and is now a nationally significant monument. At the hill’s base lies the Sri Thenvenkatachalapathy Temple, where Lord Vishnu is depicted as a saint. Legend tells that Valli was left by Vishnu and Lakshmi for a devotee king to discover. This swayambu (self-manifested) deity is believed to bless childless couples seeking progeny.
