Varadharaja Perumal Temple, also known as Hastagiri or Perumal Koil, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams visited by the Alvars, poet saints of Vaishnavism. Situated in Vishnu Kanchi, the temple is part of the sacred Mumurtivasam trio, along with Ekambareswarar and Kamakshi Amman Temples, attracting devotees for its spiritual significance and architectural grandeur.
The temple is steeped in legend, including Indra’s curse, Saraswati's yagna, and the emergence of Vishnu as Varadharajaswamy from an athi tree. Known for its unique silver and golden lizard depictions, it holds immense spiritual value for Vaishnavites. Associated with great scholars like Ramanuja, the temple remains central to the Vishishtadvaita philosophy. It also celebrates Nambi’s Devarajaashtakam, highlighting its deep historical and devotional legacy.
Historically, the temple boasts over 350 inscriptions from Chola, Pandya, Vijayanagara, and other dynasties. It underwent renovations during the Chola period and expanded significantly under later rulers. Threatened during Mughal invasions, its main deity was relocated and returned with difficulty. Renowned personalities like Robert Clive contributed to its heritage, presenting a necklace still used in annual festivals. The temple remains a treasure trove of art, culture, and devotion.
Administered by Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the temple’s legacy is closely tied to the Thathacharyas, its traditional custodians. They have been instrumental in maintaining rituals and propagating Visishtadvaita philosophy. Their lineage includes influential figures like Tirumalai Nambi and Tirukkurukai Piran Pillan, who contributed significantly to Vaishnavite literature. The temple, with its rich history and spiritual aura, continues to inspire devotion and scholarly pursuits.
